The Carter County Honor Guard is a combined effort of American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2166 of Elizabethton, TN. The Posts are committed to provide funeral honors to veterans from Carter County, TN. While Military Funeral Honors are provided by law from the branch of service of the veteran, the Carter County Honor Guard helps to bridge the gap when Military Funeral Honors are unavailable or to augment them with additional services like three-volleys of rifle salute or pall bearers.

How to get Funeral Honors
Military Funeral Honors are mandated in 10 US Code 1491. The Military Branches are required to provide military funeral honors for any qualified veteran. This will consist of; 1) Bugle playing taps, 2) Folding the US flag, and 3) Presenting the flag to the next of kin. This is "FULL" military funeral honors.
The Funeral Directors in Carter County know how to contact each Military Branch to request Military Funeral Honors, this usually takes more than 48 hours to complete. The Funeral Director will need a proof of military service like a discharge form DD 214.
Veteran Funeral Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard to augment the Military Branches or to provide the honors if they could not be contacted. In addition to being trained to provide the three parts of the "FULL" funeral honors, the Carter County Honor Guard will train to provide three-volley rifle salute, a eulogy, and pall bearers as available.
Remember, the request begins with the Funeral Director and they will need a proof of military service. Giving the Funeral Director a few days to coordinate with the Military Branches and the Carter County Honor Guard will be greatly appreciated and will help get the honors your deceased veteran deserves.
All members of the Carter County Honor Guard must be members of American Legion Post 49. This ensures you are covered under the insurance in the event of an accident or injury.

You can complete a paper application and send it to American Legion Post 49 at 111 S Watauga Ave, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Annual dues are $50, please enclose a check and a copy of your DD214 to join.
